Quick Verdict: A very good 1990s Eurodance album, warts and all
Eurodance may have seemed like a niche genre in its own way in retrospect, but it did retain some very valuable music from this time. Groups such as Aqua, 2 Unlimited and Culture Beat were phenomenally successful back in the 1990s, as well as other relatively successful one-hit wonders, mainly from European countries. Corona were another major example of this success, with their hit from this album of the same name exploding in popularity back in the mid-1990s in clubs everywhere at the time. This parent album received mostly favourable ratings from critics as well. Let’s get our dancing shoes on and go back in time to 1995, and we shall hear if this is any good.
1. Baby Baby launches into a fusion of Eurodance and Disco Music at hand, before entering into a textured tune with lots of sampled laughter. This quickly launches into an absolutely fantastic song that has some interesting sounds and textures throughout. This is a really magical and upbeat listen that sounds absolutely awesome musically to hear. Sandy Chambers has a natural, broad-ranging and fantastic singing voice that makes you want to pop out the Coronas, dance furiously and party all night long. This is a song with some sexual overtones and some classy musicianship throughout. An absolutely awesome and interesting song that proves that Corona wasn’t merely a one-hit wonder. Absolutely fantastic to hear. Eurodance may have been seen as a dated music genre by today’s standards, but by goodness, this is fantastic music to listen to. Absolutely top-notch to hear, and a fine and fantastic listen from start to finish. Awesome beyond all words. Sweet.
2. Try Me Out is another fantastic 1990s hit from Corona. Sandy Chambers sounds absolutely awesome, a little bit before autotune was even released. This launches into a soaring, joyous anthem that sounds really seriously cool to hear and to listen to. A wonderful and unique tune that retains its melodicism and energy throughout, which is really cool. This is designed to be played at 200 km per hour in a fast car down the Autobahn in Germany. It is simply that good on music levels that this is already a classic album in a way. An energetic, unique and exciting song that is futuristic and wonderful sounding music that is gloriously good to listen to. Play this out to your new partner in love and crime, just to see their reaction. A seriously wonderful and sing-along song that has barely aged. Wonderful.
3. Get Up and Boogie is a quirky, organ-led piece that sounds really cool as well. It quickly launches into a wonderfully textured and iconic song from this album. It has some Reggae styled vocals before launching into a powerful and wonderful song at hand that is wonderful and fantastic, and is a real ode to music at night. Even for a lesser track, this music is sensationally good and listenable throughout. Back in the 1990s, this music was as fresh and cool as it sounds today. Some beat breakdowns occur before Sandy Chambers relaunches back into action on the vocals. A simply interesting, nicely and extremely well structured tune that is extremely interesting to listen to. Short enough to be listenable and desirable, with a memorable chorus. Very nice.
4. I Don’t Wanna Be A Star begins with a rush of electronic sounds and singing that is sweet and lovely. This is a sad and moody-sounding track that is simply sweet. It launches into a melodic and well-structured 1990s tune with pulsating beats that are simply iconic. This music is very magical, sad-sounding and dramatic overall. Sandy Chambers, indeed, could sing a great song when needed. This song is a little contradictory in its intent, as the music and vocals indicate otherwise than the lyrics. This is an interesting song that will not appeal to those of you who enjoy happy and upbeat songs in general. Even so, this is a very wonderful song that sounds really great in its own way. A really nice tune overall. The outro is interesting.
5. I Want Your Love begins with some neat piano, simple and beautiful vocals by Sandy Chambers and launches into a dramatic and fantastic song with some pounding beats and unique melodicism. This seriously deserves more credit than it gets. The music is perfectly enjoyable and listenable, even today. There is an element of Disco Music about this particular banger at heart. It breaks down into a luscious section, before the singing, piano and beats continue on. It is somewhat of a mystery why this album does not get more respect and love. It is a fantastic combination of House, Techno, Eurodance and female power into one album. This is basically a pioneering album that has some tasty music elements to it all. Sweet, lovely and enjoyable overall. Sandy Chambers also deserves credit as a singer, having a multi-octave and soulful voice that simply sounds awesome. Another great effort overall. Simply luscious.
6. In The Name Of Love begins with some laughter, launching into a breezy and bright tune with some interesting electronics throughout. Some sweet and neat electronics emerge, followed by piano playing that is pretty. This is a fantastic and euphoric listen that is largely instrumental at the start, but sounds pretty. These sounds and textures continue before launching into a unique and wonderful song that has some interesting and precise sounds and singing. Sandy Chambers has a very gorgeous voice, and she articulates the feminine emotion that is not feminist, but very powerful and strong. A seriously fantastic song and album, this music and sonic palette is pleasant and wonderful overall. A good 1990s piece of music that sounds fresh, fun and enjoyable. This is an album that more people need to listen to and explore overall. Fresh and unique music.
7. I Gotta Keep Dancing has some smooth vocals and interesting electronics to begin with. This is a song about dancing one’s blues away, and is very reminiscent of Disco Music, as such. Again, this is yet another underrated and fantastic song to listen to. A seriously powerful and melodic song that has its own beauty, uniqueness and momentum to it all. Some people may judge this as just simply Neo-Disco Music, but all the same, it is in a genre of its own and mixes a great number and amount of sounds, styles and melodicism throughout that simply works very well. A powerful and pretty, expressive song that blows away most of the mundane and throwaway DJ mixes being made today. Again, this deserves to be played in a car driven at high speed. A very awesome song that is not something to be dismissed. Simply wonderful.
8. The Rhythm Of The Night is the main hit of this album. Instantly upon listening, one can hear why. Jenny B’s iconic voice, melodicism and the music melodies will be recognisable and make you smile. It quickly enters into beats, sonic textures and sounds that are incredibly lovely. This song is another fantastic representation of the Eurodance scene and sounds seriously joyous. A 1990s hit that seriously deserves to be heard more by serious listeners and music fans out there. It has a neat and interesting melodic background with some screaming in the background, before launching back into a soulful and euphoric vibe throughout. If you need a good music time warp back to 1995, this is a song worth hearing. An absolutely awesome and powerful song that is a cause for celebration to this very day. Kudos to all who made this song; it is a fantastic one. There is a breakdown in the second half, which is uplifting and fantastic to listen to. A real joy musically to listen to and to hear. This is one of the essential Eurodance hits from decades ago. Top.
9. Baby I Need Your Love is a pretty, interesting and fantastic song from the start that continues the upbeat and lovable nature of this album. This music continues to shape and evolve throughout, launching into a punchy and beatastic Eurodance-style song. This song is very lovely and listenable. It continues the stylistic mash-up of Disco, House, Techno, Eurodance and Pop Music into a mellifluous tune. There is a neat breakdown near the midsection, before Sandy Chambers continues to sing and sounds fantastic in the process. A lovely tune that demands to be listened to and heard, with some sexual overtones throughout it all. Nonetheless, this is another wonderful and lively tune that needs to be listened to from this album. Absolutely awesome music to listen to and to seriously enjoy. Just wonderful throughout. Another great song.
10. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is a melodic and sad plea for a lover not to upset one, in a sense of paranoia and love-based emotions. This quickly enters into a Eurodance tune that sounds moody and different. This has some particularly interesting sounds and textures on it all, sounding really cool and vibrant. A really interesting and deep-sounding tune that has an uptempo and fast-paced nature to it all. To some, the appeal of this album may not be there. Having said that, the material on this release is genuinely great overall. A beautiful and rather trippy piece with some insane electronic trickery in it, especially in the second half of it all. Short, sweet and unique music that has stood the test of time very well. A lovely and interesting listen from start to finish.
11. When I Give My Love begins with some electronic washes and leads into a good song with some interesting and minor-key melodies overall. This music and sonic template is very interesting and beautiful, leading into a quick and dramatic piece of music that sounds moody, yet excellent. This is a tune that again deserves more attention to listen to as such. Nonetheless, this music does sound really refreshing and interesting. This may not be the best song on this album, but it does sound nicely crafted and interesting enough to listen to on this album. Not a happy-sounding tune, but it is nonetheless still consistent with the rest of the album. A really cool and interesting song that has its unique sound, flavour and passion overall from within. This music is certainly pretty and impressive in general, even if this track is a little weaker overall. Not bad, all the same.
12. Do You Want Me begins with some extraordinary vocals and singing that sound powerful and magical. It quickly launches into a neat and sweet tune at hand. This is a song about confrontation, and Sandy Chambers sounds really cool and melodic on this song. A seriously awesome tune. Her voice is not a million miles away from the range and tonality of the female backing singers on Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) album. All in all, another wonderful Eurodance song with some nicely layered vocals and sonic elements that are very 1990s. This is also relatively short, meaning that you won’t get bored at all. This music is definitely tuneful in its approach. Near the end is an interesting combination of vocals and electronics that definitely sounds unique. Another solid song to listen to.
13. You Gotta Be Movin’ begins with some Techno styled electronics and ambient washes of sound. Piano enters, alongside percussion sounds. This is very interesting. Some snare drum rolls lead into electronic melodies. Admittedly, this album runs out of puff a little bit on this tune. Having said that, this quickly launches into another fairly futuristic and interesting tune at hand. This is, after all, the last main song on this album release. Still, it is good, just not necessarily great as such. The electronics are indeed interesting, however. The music and sounds on it are simply interesting and impressive, all the same. This music is a bit too minimal and lacking vocals as an individual piece to be really appreciated. A good listen, even though this really does not need to be here as a tune. The piano in the second half is very good, and the looped vocals are good, even if the rest of this tune is seemingly average. Bonus points to you if you have made it this far. Nonetheless, this is a good exercise in House Music styled sounds and textures, although that is all it really is. This music leads into a section with interesting beats and sounds. This really isn’t overly necessary at this point. Still, it’s okay, but just a bit draining at this point. Good, however. The vocal loops at the end are different.
14. The Rhythm Of The Night – Rapino Bros 7 is obviously a remix of the main hit. It is short, sweet and interesting with some neatly remixed elements about it all. It launches into a trance-style, trippy and interesting listen that certainly has some interesting sounds. Not as good as the main hit on the album, particularly with the treated vocals as such. Even so, this is a good afterthought. It is okay, but you could probably skip ahead at this point. A different tune, as such, but you’d be better off putting the main song on repeat instead. A fairly disappointing remix that could have been jettisoned from this album. This album does seem to wear off some of its appeal by this point. That’s okay, though, because most of the album is done by this point. In any case, this is okay but not as fantastic as the original.
15. Baby Baby – Dancing Divaz Club Mix is a six-minute-long remix. It begins with some neat beats being played. Pounding 4/4 beats enter, which adds some emphasis to it all. Seriously, these remixes do not need to be here at this point in time. This is okay, and it is somewhat constructed as a Techno tune, but with a gradual buildup and a layered amount of sounds throughout it all. This is a better remix than the track before it, all the same. This has a very nice layering of sounds and vocals throughout, which sounds really interesting and cool. The climax is fantastic, and it genuinely sounds quite great. This is completely different to the music on the radio today, but is a good and euphoric track design that is quite straightforward, but layered and executed extremely well. In the second half are some digital melodies and sounds that are simply sweet to listen to. A really cool and explorational track that has some worthwhile merits to listening to it. Some may wish to skip ahead, once again, as this is rather minimalist and lengthy in its approach. Even so, this is a good remix for all its repetition as a track. A good listen if you like remixes, but otherwise, not really necessary to listen to here. A good and mostly interesting six-minute-long piece. It ends with some rather repetitive melodies and a vocal take.
16. The Rhythm Of The Night – Lee Marrow Space Remix is the final track on this album. It begins with some freaky outer space electronic sounds, which sound creepy. This launches into a very odd and off-sounding tune at hand. Goodness knows why this is here. It sounds devilish and demonic in general. It eventually launches quickly into a good remix of the track at hand, before launching into some spacey melodies. Again, this is not really essential listening in general at this point. Even so, this is still rewarding in its own way, should you choose to listen on. The music and sounds are very bouncy and powerful, although to be fair, the original mix of this particular tune is by far the best. Nice to hear for a change. Some rapping is thrown into this one, which kind of destroys the intention of this song. A good listen, but nothing spectacular here. This music is symphonic in its own way, all the same. The second half has some interesting and layered rapping with some uninspirational lyrics, and Techno styled Eurodance sounds throughout. A good listen, but fairly lacking for a remix. This is still a fairly nostalgic 1990s listen that has some energetic and interesting music to it all, which sounds very pretty and gloriously so. The amount of craftily executed sounds and textures is really interesting, however. Towards the end are some minimal Roland beats that sound addictive, yet a bit too minimal on their own. This leads to a good conclusion of beats and singing to finish off the album, if you are still here. A good finish to an album worth hearing. It ends with some spacey, delayed vocals.
This album is a really good example of the strengths of Eurodance-based music from back in the 1990s. Yes, this music is by no means perfect, but it does capture a sense of musicianship and awe that will want to bring the listener back to this album time after time. The music, in particular the title track, defines some of the best music of the 1990s. Should you listen to this album? If you love any form of Disco, Acid House, Techno, House or Pop Music, you will enjoy this. Fans of guitars and Rock Music, however, will wish to look elsewhere.
