An Australian band that mixes contemporary Rock Music and Electronic Music trends with some Hip Hop and other bizarre genres? Sounds like an interesting listen ahead. Fresh off the runway from their debut album, Tu-Plang, Regurgitator decided to buckle down after their extensive US tour and create an album worthy of listening to from both their fan base and the wider recording public ahead. Recorded in a warehouse in the notorious Fortitude Valley area of Brisbane, Australia, this album was released in 1997 and has since been regarded as a great Australian Music album. Since its release, anniversary editions have also been made in commemoration of this album, often seen as Regurgitator’s best. Let’s take a listen to this album, and we shall hear if it is any good today.

1. I Like Your Old Stuff Better Than Your New Stuff begins with some electronic Acid House styled sounds and snappy drums. Some robotic and processed vocals emerge. This is quirky and different, sounding really weird and quirky. Repeated vocals emerge. If you like weird and odd, then this music will no doubt rub off well on you. It is quite catchy, in its own way. A decent and quirky song that has a good quality of music about it. This is an exploration in sound that is worthwhile and interesting listening throughout. Really quirky and cool to listen to. Wonderful.

2. Everyday Formula has some Alternative Rock guitars and fast-paced drums, launching into a great song that has a blink-182 feel to it all. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic song to hear that has a promising and well-constructed basis. The lyrics are very 1990s as well. This is an excellent song that has lyrics moaning against the mundanities of modern life. Short, sweet and excellent. The vocals are classy and excellent as well.

3. ! (The Song Formerly Known As) is a nod to the spirit of Prince in the song title. It has some looped guitars and drums, and sounds excellent, in its own quirky way. This launches into an excellent and quirky 1990s tune that is memorable from that era. Very, very catchy music that had a ton of radio play back in the day. Regurgitator kicks the proverbial on this song. This is extremely crunchy and fantastic, and has a brief reference to Oasis as well. An absolutely awesome song that has some fresh and wonderful variety about it all. There is a solo section with loops and bongos galore, before launching back into this super catchy tune at hand. An unforgettable and listenable Pop Music staple from the 1990s. Absolutely awesome music. The outro is hilarious as well.

4. Black Bugs begins with some Roland drum machine beats and guitars. It launches into another good contemporary music about playing video games and quickly launches into a good Alternative Rock song that has power and spirit throughout. A seriously awesome song that is about excessive gaming and the experiences that are part of it all. There is a keyboard solo and other music intricacies throughout. Nonetheless, a very awesome and sweet tune to listen to. Very good and different music that has a good appeal to it all. A solidly good song that has effortless energy about it all. Fantastic.

5. The World Of Sleaze begins with some dry electric guitar playing and launches into a sweet and different song that has some gentle vocal singing on it as well. This enters into a good Alternative Rock song with profanities galore, and it is an interesting listen about the world of getting it on. All in all, another good song at hand that has some interesting and inspired Pop/Rock Music at hand. This is a good song about the dirty nature of sex, and is very much an adult tune at hand. A great and wonderful song, and something that has an unusual and odd appeal throughout it all. Very, very good music at hand.

6. I Piss Alone has some Classical Music style strings and has some ridiculous lyrics about, yup, peeing alone. It launches into a weird tune that would make the Dead Kennedys wonder why they are in existence. This is a mockery of a song that isn’t supposed to be taken seriously. It’s not the best, to be fair. It is a poor music idea that really shouldn’t be on this otherwise good album. Weird and wacky musically. It has some looped vocals at the end, which are annoying and sped up to conclude.

7. Unit has some cool liquid Electronic sounds and sampled drumbeats. It is a quirky tune with some wacky vocals sampled and mixed into it all. Nonetheless, this is reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails in some ways, but not negative like that music, just weird. An unusual sort of listen, as is the rest of the album. A good and wacky intermissionary sort of tune that sounds cool. It finishes off with a vocal sample, simply stating: “I am…the unit”.

8. I Will Lick Your Arsehole says it all. It begins with some sounds akin to the Prodigy, drums and weird music to flavour it all up. This launches into a good mixture of EDM and Rock drum beats, which sounds really clever and fantastic. Some rapping emerges, and this tune gets nicely alive. An absolutely cool listen, for all its weirdness at hand. Very clever and wonderfully musical to listen to. Some looped vocals also emerge, stating the song title. Beeps and bleeps are the order of the day on this tune. The lyrics and rapping don’t make sense, but that is fine, given the context of this song and album. Still, this does sound awesome and powerful. The looped vocal sample stating the track name and neat percussion ends this one.

9. Modern Life begins with a fairly straightforward Rock backing tune and launches into a smooth and mellow tune about materialism. This is a good song, even if it isn’t the highlight of the album at hand. A really good listen, although this tune is likely filler overall. It seems that Regurgitator made an album full of consistently impressive music, although it is weirder than anything else out there, for the most part. A straightforward and solid Pop/Rock tune at hand about the materialism of humanity at hand. It ends with some random acoustic guitar.

10. Polyester Girl has some Acid House liquid sounds and electronic drum beats. It quickly launches into a classy and interesting song about winning a lady who is a blow-up doll at hand. Very funny to listen to, and certainly quirky in the best music sense. A wonderful and sleazily sounding song that is both catchy and weird. If you love out there and humourous music, then this is a great listen for you. The music and sounds are definitely an oddity in the history of music. This is a very odd and weird tune about the misadventures of loving a blow-up doll. Hilarious, if you think about it. Very cool, if a little bit naff of a song.

11. 1 2 3 4 is a weird and odd tune with a strange intro, which launches into a sort of Hardcore Punk mockery. In this respect, this is an excellent listen throughout. Very good and different to listen to, and it goes for less than a minute in length.

12. Mr T begins with some odd electronic instrumentation and fantastic drumming. This quickly launches into a seriously cool song at hand, and launches into a smooth and groovy song. Mr T is a legend himself, just for the record. This is a neat and interesting song with some neat transitions and sounds about it all. This is a strange and mellow tune that is sonically rewarding throughout. This is the best Alternative Music album in the name of weird ever done. For all its bizarre oddity, it sounds really cool and fantastic to listen to. There is a decent mixture of Rock and EDM throughout, which is cool and points ahead to the future of music at hand. Cyber bliss is here on this song. Awesome work.

13. Just Another Beautiful Story is the final track on the album. It begins with some warped 808 State-like keyboards and enters into a strange piece of music at hand. This is a very weird tune. It has 8-bit styled processed sounds emerge, and launches into a smooth and lovely tune that has some genuinely great singing on it. A really odd tune, but a definitely worthwhile song about rejecting religion and God for love instead. A pseudo-Liam Gallagher-style vocal in the chorus is here, although this is far and away from Oasis’s style of music. The song at hand is pretty and wonderful, and has singing about the existence and the end of life at hand. A really wonderful sounding tune, with a key change and horns galore. This is really out there, weird, but the music is strong and sensationally good throughout. A wacky tune with a good conclusion to a relatively good album, this is weirdness set to music in its purest form. It ends with some more cyber melodies, and the mission of the album is complete. It fades out gently.

This album release is a solid listen and is likely the weirdest classic album ever. It combines Pop, Rock, Punk, Rap and Electronic Music into a focused and seamless whole in an Alternative Music way. Just be wary that this is a very odd album, and many will not appreciate its weirdness. Still, Regurgitator have made a definitely good listening experience on this album, and it is worth it for its weirdness and wonderful sounds. Should you listen to this album? Only if you can appreciate out there, in which it will reward you. Fans of more orthodox music genres will want to look elsewhere. There are anniversary editions available to listen to as well.
