Quick Verdict: A relatively good Acoustic Rock album from the late 1990s
Sweden has had a huge array of Pop stars over the years that have flooded the charts globally. Most notably, the group ABBA was a huge international sensation, particularly in the 1970s. Fast forward two decades from that point, and Eagle-Eye Cherry released a hit record that was his debut album, which went platinum in the USA and sold millions of copies globally. As the son of the legendary Don Cherry, a notable trumpeter, this album was a product of destiny that had been a long time coming. Let’s go back to the late 1990s and hear this release, and hopefully it will be a good one.
1. Save Tonight launches the album with some nice acoustic guitar strumming, drums and launches into a good tune at hand. Eagle-Eye Cherry does not have a great singing voice, but this is a fantastic song at hand. This is about drinking with a lover and the experiences that one has as such with the person of one’s fancy. This is a very 1990s song that has a very instantly melodic and lovable nature about it. There is a slide guitar solo in the background as this song plays on. A great song about a one-night stand, as such, but in the most Poppy and lovable listening experience possible. A good song to put on repeat in your life. Worth it to listen to. The slide guitar at the end is very good.
2. Indecision begins with some crisp and melodic acoustic guitar, which sounds sweet. It quickly launches into a Rock Music styled jam with some good guitars. This is yet another good song that has a pretty sound, which is very reflective musically. To be fair, Eagle-Eye Cherry has a very ordinary singing voice, which is very deep, gravelly and limited in vocal range. Despite that, this is another good song that will appeal to fans of Rock Music in particular. This is okay, but nothing mindblowing overall. The midsection has guitars galore, and the sound is a good melting pot of Blues and Rock influences throughout. A good song with some interesting musicianship and some loose references to commitment and other pseudo-Christian philosophy. There is a slide guitar solo, followed by a neat guitar solo at the end of it all. Not bad, although this is fairly dated today. A good song.
3. Comatose (In The Arms Of Slumber) begins with some clean drumming and acoustic guitar. This song launches into action, and it sounds very pretty and lovely. It is about being in the arms of a lover as such, and has some bongo beats playing throughout. The lyrics are very poetic and wonderful indeed. A really sweet and lovely tune, perfect for some intimate lovemaking with your partner, this is a really fantastic tune to hear. A really great listen, better than what critics of the time thought. A genuinely enjoyable song with some nice acoustic guitar soloing throughout it. A really great listen about having a lover preventing one from doing something stupid at hand, this is a cool tune that anyone who has made love will understand the purpose of. A really interesting and pleasant listen at hand. This music is very magical. Worth it. The outro is pure bliss to listen to, with organs, bongos, drums and calm singing to match it all. Very nice to hear.
4. Worried Eyes begins with some acoustic slide guitar and some electronic breakbeats in the background. Other instrumentation enters, and this piece gets going along nicely. A great acoustic blues tune with some female singing guest vocals as well. A really great and anthemic tune at hand, which sounds super sweet. The music and sounds are extremely pretty and poetic throughout. All in all, a really great tune at hand that sounds absolutely superb. This is a legendary song that has some romantic and genuine appeal about it. In the second half is a nice breakdown with some sweet and tender lyrics about the concerns and pitfalls that one can have in love. This is far from what the critics said negatively about this music. It is pure bliss. Good effort overall. The extended outro is very sweet with prominent piano, singing and acoustic slide guitar. Wonderful.
5. Rainbow Wings is a neat acoustic guitar ballad with bongos and hummed melodies to begin with. This sounds sweet and excellent throughout. Soon enough, Eagle-Eye Cherry sings sweetly about avoiding selling one’s soul and talks about the concerns of satanic forces in the world. This is a better song than you’d expect, with layers of interesting sounds and production. A really great and timeless-sounding tune about the perils and pitfalls of evil in this world. All in all, this tune is a great listen with some pleasantly hummed melodies throughout. This is a very sweet and lovely listen throughout that has some good magic to it all. The acoustic guitar solo is absolutely gorgeous throughout. Sure, this is nothing groundbreaking, but it works. A sweet and divine tune that has magic to it all. Music that comes from within on this song. A very pretty and lovely song to listen to, although the outro could have been trimmed down a bit.
6. Falling In Love Again is a gorgeously upbeat tune with sweet acoustic guitar strumming, and has Eagle-Eye Cherry singing nicely over the top of it all. This is the sort of campfire acoustic guitar music that sounds extremely good. Soon enough, drums and electric guitars kick in, and we have a lively song evolve at hand. This song is a really excellent listen, and no wonder it was a hit single at the time. A very, very cool tune to listen to. There is a sweet and clean guitar solo section, followed by an enthusiastic-sounding set of singing and acoustic guitars. This tune is a really divine and magical listening experience at hand. Following it is a cool and awesome guitar solo section that sounds really good. A really top and sweet listen, likely designed to woo the ladies. Excellent song, all the same.
7. Conversation is another gorgeous acoustic guitar-based piece that has some nice organ thrown into the mix as well. Eagle-Eye Cherry sings about the difficulties in raising a child, and he indicates that it is sometimes a hard story to sell about life. This evolves into a lovely song with snappy drumming that is tender and lovely. Likely coming from autobiographical experience, Eagle-Eye Cherry details the difficulties of life throughout. A supremely pleasant and listenable tune to hear, although admittedly single people without children will unlikely understand this song. A thoroughly enjoyable song, even if this music isn’t as popular as it should be. A really great and superb listen that carries a realistic message across, amongst pretty and genuinely great music at hand. The guitars are really fantastic throughout, especially towards the end. It sounds like Eagle-Eye Cherry had his own musical groove as well. An underrated song to listen to.
8. When Mermaids Cry begins with some neat drumming and expertly strummed acoustic guitars, along with some neat piano and bass guitar. This tune sounds very gentle, lovable and lyrically surreal in a way. The music at hand is superb, tender and lovely. If you love Acoustic Rock with some awesome lyrics, then this likely inspired by Jimi Hendrix piece will sound great to you. All in all, a very inspired and magical song to listen to. A seriously awesome song to hear, this music is exceptionally joyous and wonderful to listen to. An absolutely gorgeously moving song that deserves more credit than it gets, with some female soulful backing vocal harmonies throughout. A really sweet and emotional song that has some definite appeal to it all. Nonetheless, a really great listen for what this is. A very good song that has some power and musical impact.
9. Shooting Up In Vain is obviously about heroin use. It begins with some strange mixture of electronic sounds, with guitars gradually entering this piece. Heartbeat-style kick drums enter, followed by drumming and soft backing vocal harmonies. Eagle-Eye Cherry sings about the life of an addict at hand, and this isn’t great listening if you don’t like songs about drug use. A pretty and gorgeous tune about the pitfalls of injecting oneself with a needle, this is a moral story about drug addiction, use and abuse. A good listen, although this tune has some great stories throughout about why using illicit drugs is not a wise idea. Drug addiction does kill many people innocently, and it is never a good idea to use or abuse drugs. A really excellent song at hand, which should be heard by those of you who think that taking crystal meth or fentanyl is okay. It never is. The outro section is lyrically catchy and matched with great Rock Music instrumentation at hand. “He’s got a one-way ticket on a derailed train, he’s got to stop shooting up in vain…” is a great lyric line. Don’t use drugs.
10. Permanent Tears begins with some drum machine beats and transitions into a minor-key-based tune at hand. A really excellent listen, this tune is a really sad story about being alone and lonely without support in life. Unfortunately, this is more common than you’d expect. Life is difficult for many, particularly in the 21st century. Fortunately, Eagle-Eye Cherry articulates this very well. A sad song devoted to a lonely lady in particular, by the sounds of it. It has a sweet and moving acoustic guitar solo, which sounds good. The music is sad and rather dreary here, although the moral sentiment is good in itself. A sweet and neatly arranged song overall. Very pretty and precise-sounding with its intentions. A very magical tune to listen to, although it is hard to understand the lyrical matter’s purpose here.
11. Death Defied By Will begins with some neat and pretty acoustic guitar parts that sound nice, followed by a slide guitar section and drums. This song is about a guy who takes risks in the name of life. This song doesn’t make a lot of sense lyrically, but the musicianship and performances are very lovely and unique to hear. This is good music about one dying prematurely without clarity. Despite this, the tune at hand is solidly good to listen to. The strummed acoustic guitars, harmonies and clean electric guitar do make for a good impression throughout. A very pretty and listenable song at hand that makes for a weird listen throughout, at least lyrically. It ends with a lengthy acoustic and electric guitar jam that sounds good.
12. Desireless is a six-minute-long piece that begins with fluttering piano parts and launches into a moving and interesting piece of piano-based beauty at hand. This music sounds extremely sweet as it plays on, piano by itself. Some horns enter to match the acoustic guitar and piano, sounding very unusual. This is an instrumental piece that has genuine appeal to it all. A really good listen at hand, which is an instrumental piece of beauty. Soon enough, singing emerges that sounds different. This is a good addition to the end of a fairly good album that sounds organic and awesome simultaneously. This is an interesting instrumental that warrants listening to. This quickly leads into a guitar-based jam with some nice guitar soloing that sounds very, very good. A very intensely moving instrumental that is a pleasantly different addition to the end of it all. The second half has guitars, trumpets and other instrumental solos galore. A really great piece of music is present here. This music gradually evolves into a passionate jam that is very flavoursome. Mixing Acoustic Rock jamming with a touch of Jazz is surreal and fantastic to listen to. This slowly wraps up with the wordless vocal harmonies, trumpet galore and piano, followed by a fine finish.
This is a relatively good album that has aged much better than one would have expected from the outset. On one hand, the music is a fine effort overall with natural acoustic guitar-based jams and songs to please the crowds. However, it is more bland and less musically exciting than other releases around this time, and Eagle-Eye Cherry isn’t a household name, nor a great singer. Still, there are some good moments here regardless. Should you listen to this album? Yes, if you love Acoustic Rock Music and want to hear more, but unlikely so if you are a fan of someone such as Skrillex.
