This is super cheesy music, just to warn you. After the phenomenal success of Aqua’s earlier works in the mid to late 1990s, there was a void in the world of popular music to hear similarly cheesy EDM that was based on Eurodance and had an upbeat and here today, gone tomorrow basis. Vengaboys then entered the scene, with the assistance of two Spanish DJs named Danski and Delmundo, releasing this album after We Like To Party became a global hit. Let’s take a listen to this album and although it’s not designed to be taken seriously, it should be heard nonetheless.
We Like To Party! (The Vengabus) begins with a honking sound, and a killer catchy melody that sounds quite cool. Soon enough, vocals enter along with other sonic loops and this tune gets going. Once the main melody and beats kick in, you are in club heaven. This is an unforgettable listen and has some Pop female singing and lyrics emerge, and we are on a great, very cheesy and catchy listen. Once you hear this, you will never forget it. This is ideal for friends and company if you want to have a real laugh in life. A cool tune that deserves to be heard from time to time, particularly from EDM heads, which is really upbeat, dynamic and cool. Pop some pills and get down to your local Rave with this blasting at full volume in your car. There is a breakdown in the second half which is cool, with the sounds of car horns, before launching back into the main track at hand. A really awesome tune that is for those who need to forget about the hassles of life. A great three minute Pop piece.
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! is also very famous like the track before it. It begins with some simple loops, some whoa-oa’s sung and this tune launches into a great and cool piece about getting it on. This is sensationally great and is a great tune to hear for those ecstatic times. It builds up nicely to the chorus, and when it does hit, you will want to keep dancing to this tune forever. It is seriously that good. Simple, repetitive and infectious, Vengaboys keep the spirit of the 1990s going with these immortal tunes. “Boom, boom, boom, boom!! I want you in my room, to spend the night together, together in my room!” is a great and simple statement that no doubt many couples used as a song to get it on from this time. There is a breakdown in the second half, briefly before the music continues along nicely. Great and fantastic listening musically, this is an immortal classic. An awesome tune to hear, this deserves repeat listens. Nice three minute long EDM Eurodance cheese.
Ho Ho Vengaboys! begins with a Eurodance melody, some percussion loops and enters into another great tune that fits the experience of this album. Singing emerges and this seems a little more serious, but it still holds up the listening experience and concept of the album overall. Quite catchy, this music is fairly dated, but it still works amazingly and wonderfully. The chorus is quite catchy in particular, and the Vengaboys were riding high here. This is another fantastic listening experience that has lasted well to this very day. Some chanting call-and-response is in the second half of this tune before this tune leads back gradually into the chorus. A brilliant and decent listen, and definitely worth hearing. Cheesy, danceable and electronic, the Vengaboys are there when you need that sugar rush in your bloodstream. Cool stuff.
Up & Down begins with some atonal sounds and beats, before launching into another EDM-based tune with some melodies adapted from the opening track. Again, this isn’t the most intellectual of music, but it is designed to make one go crazy and dance with their friends. The title of the song is looped and repeated here, amongst some simple and addictive textures and beats. Some yelping is here, too. Nonetheless, this does work incredibly well and sounds powerful and euphoric. In the second half, some eerie string sections enter into the background, before launching into a big breakdown and build up afterwards. This sounds decent and interesting for what it is. Soon enough, it launches back into the main melodic section and sounds absolutely killer. A straight up interesting and danceable tune to hear. Vengaboys know how to party, that’s for sure. Excellent work.
We’re Going To Ibiza! begins with a mock aircraft captain’s statement about being on an airline owned by the Vengaboys, going straight to Ibiza itself. It quickly launches into an unusual tune that sounds a lot like a joke Reggae piece. The singing here is melodic and pretty, and this unusual tune is again, surprisingly good and really cool. A surprisingly interesting listen. For those of you who don’t know anything about Ibiza, it is the famous island near Spain where EDM festivals and Raves are held non-stop. Therefore, it is a party place. Nonetheless, this tune makes some amazing and real sense to the listener who appreciates this sort of thing. An awesome listening experience, this sounds like something that you can chill at the beach with a drink in your hand. A great snapshot of the sort of music that the 1990s was best for. A pleasant, interesting and lovely listen, with more mock aircraft captain talk in the second half before this tune wraps up nicely into a sweet conclusion. Great to hear, and definitely worth your time.
Parada De Tettas is a furious tribal Dance track from the start. It sounds really cool and fantastic and quickly stops with just the main melody playing. Nonetheless, this sounds awesome and great. The tune quickly gets going with handclaps and the song title being repeated by a Spanish lady. Soon enough, this tune gets going and it sounds memorable, emotional and great. Beats eventually kick in and we are underway in this Spanish-flavoured piece. A great and driven EDM tune, this still sounds great today, although it is a little dated. It sounds really cool and wonderful throughout. The phrase, “Venga!” is shouted throughout here as well. The second half sounds very good and euphoric throughout. A wonderful, energetic and emotional listen, Vengaboys have made that perfect party album that you need to hear for that special occasion. This tune is a little repetitive, but still awesome to hear. Great stuff. It ends suddenly after four minutes length.
To Brazil! begins with some Brazilian percussion and chanting, which sounds cool. This is followed by some electronic drum rolls, before launching into quite a good South American flavoured tune to listen to. This is not as good as the other tunes on this album, but it is heartwarming and great fun. The Vengaboys riff from the first track of the album reoccurs here, and this is a really great listening experience that just makes one want to go crazy and dance wild along to it. Another cool tune to listen to, although this is not the best from this album. Catchy anyway, this is a euphoric-sounding piece. Great to listen to anyway. Worth your ears and time, all the same. This is a cool tune to hear, it ends nicely.
Movin’ Around begins with a vocoder voice, some simple 4/4 beats and loops, sounding straightforward yet eternally cool. There is a vocoder led breakdown following shortly afterwards, which has some interesting and varied textures build up shortly afterwards. Soon enough, this launches into a straightforward and more serious sounding piece of music that is designed more for dancing than thinking. The midsection has more robotic vocals, before this nicely layered tune breaks apart, and gradually builds back up again. Nice to hear, this is an addictive sound to listen to and hear. A really cool tune to listen to, this does sound really simple and groovetastic. Again, this is a little repetitive, but it sounds mint.
The Vengabeat begins with tribal drum beats and shouts and quickly launches into another really awesome tune to hear. It sounds super energetic and interesting and breaks down into a melodic riff based section. Some cool phrase based chanting emerges, and this piece eventually launches into a monster of a tune that sounds really amazing. A very decent and powerful listen, this is one for those who love to dance. It is obviously designed for dancefloors in mind and sounds super pulsating and cool. This is fairly repetitive music if there is a flaw to it. Despite that, this is no worse than any mainstream EDM tune out there today. It sounds cool because it is. A bit boring after a while due to its repetitive nature, but sounding really supercharged and clever, the Vengaboys knew how to make people around the world move. A great listening experience, and something worth your time, once again. A fiery and lively listening experience.
Paradise… is a lengthy piece of music at over seven minutes long. It begins with some cut-up beats that are multiplied and looped, which sounds really cool. This is quickly followed by subsonic bass that sounds really groovy. This continues on for some time, and a voice invites us to paradise itself. This begins to sound ethereal and tranquil with some gorgeous atmospheric sounds on this tune. Regardless, this is a sonic trip that demands your attention and time. A really interesting listen with piano, ambient washes, chilled-out beats and great attention to detail here, this showcases a softer and gentler nature to the Vengaboys music that one would have never originally expected. A gorgeous melody in the background is here as well. Sweet, lovely and atmospheric, this sounds spectacularly great. This will take you to The Beach, amongst other locations around the world that are perfect. Calm, soothing and uplifting, this is a winner. A really great listening experience and something perfect to meditate on and close one’s eyes to. The album does seem a bit repetitive at times, but at this point, it’s okay. There is a breakdown in the second half of the track, before some nicely programmed drum beats and other unusual sounds swirl in and out of audibility. This is a great and underrated effort. Totally worth your time, and listening. The tune wraps up with the ethereal sounds repeating nicely, before breaking down and concluding with vocals. Sweet.
Superfly Slick Dick is an amusing song title, if there were ever one. It launches into a straightforward EDM piece with some dark melodies and some headrush inducing sounds. Soon enough, this launches into quite a cool dance piece which has some singing about a bad ex-boyfriend that one has been the worst one has ever been. Some male robotic vocals are present as well. This is something owing to the Trance Music scene of the time, and it sounds super cool despite what one may think. A really interesting and beat heavy listen, you won’t stop grooving to this particular number. A really cool listen, this has a breakdown with some euphoric sounds and some lyrics continuing to point out the faults of a lover. Rather unusual for a track with such a name, the moodiness makes up for the track with beats galore and a danceable feel. Great to listen to. This is a cut that is very unusual for what it is. A little lengthy, again, but nonetheless interesting. Catchy all the way through though, and this wraps up after five minutes in length. A good listen, but not the best from the album here.
24 Hours begins with straightforward House style beats from Roland machines. It quickly shifts into another overly serious sounding tune with some good cut-up melodies and playing. This eventually launches into a bunch of Ambient washes, before leading into a straightforward EDM tune. This is very danceable, simple and quite repetitive for a tune of its nature. It does sound really good though, despite the repetition. There is a breakdown after a couple of minutes before some additional textures and percussion enter. Put simply, this may be DJ-styled filler, but it is really enjoyable at that. The masterminds behind Vengaboys are great here, and this music proves so. An energetic piece of music with synth strings, beats galore and colourful progressions, Vengaboys sound like that they were on a mission to conquer the EDM world. There is a stop in the second half, with just some cyber melodies bubbling away nicely, which is interesting. Beats and melodies quickly follow, along with a key change. Gloriously good, this is rather forgotten over the history of music. An uplifting and listenable tune, this sounds extremely punchy and powerful. It powers along all the way through to its logical conclusion, which is minimal, yet catchy and enjoyable. A good finish to a strong album that, honestly, should be heard more often by others. It ends with percussive beats.
This is a good album that showed the EDM Eurodance world that, for a moment in time in 1999, the Vengaboys conquered that scene with cheesy, euphoric and worthwhile hits. Sadly, this imagery has not lasted long term for such a musical combination of talent. Still, if you think Aqua was not exactly up your alley but you enjoy the cheesiest of cheesy EDM, this may be for you. So, should you listen to it? Sure thing, even for a laugh, it’s worth it.
One of the best 1990s Eurodance EDM albums made.
8/10
