After being a member of the bands Racer X and Mr. Big, Paul Gilbert managed to begin a moderately successful solo career as a shred guitarist extraordinaire. Although this isn’t a hugely popular nor high-selling release, it still warrants listening as Paul Gilbert is solidly underrated as a guitarist to this day and this is often seen as one of his better solo career efforts. He has utilised his solo career to incorporate a wider array of influences than just shred-based soloing, and this album sets that record straight. Let’s take a listen to this album, which is an amusingly titled one and has a good album cover to suit it.
Get It launches right into it with a cool drum roll, with multitracked guitars following and Paul Gilbert sings in a high octave and straightforward way which is excellent. This is instantly loveable and underrated, singing about love and lust for ladies out there. A good listen that takes some influences from other great guitarists out there, such as Steve Vai, this sounds really cool. A sweet guitar solo that sounds very sensual is here, and the song quickly resumes. A really awesome and pleasant love based song that harks back to the 1960s and 1970s. Brilliant.
Girl Crazy begins with some muted guitar that eventually launches into a really cool tune that takes elements of the past of music and brings it into something relevant for 1998. This is another straight-up brilliant listen about being crazily in love with ladies. It is a great and catchy tune that sounds fantastic and Classic Rock fans in particular will dig this music. Paul Gilbert proves himself to be a fine artist and musician, and the harmonies here are divine on this song. This is followed by a sensationally great guitar solo that is jaw-dropping. The song itself resumes and Paul Gilbert shows that studying the history of music is rewarding, indeed. “I’m girl crazy! It’s breaking my heart…” is sung repeatedly here with gorgeous harmonies to match, over a fine Classic Rock backing. The ending has thrashy drums, and manic guitar soloing and sounds sweet and majestic. Nice work dude, worth every second listening.
Be My Wife is a longer tune at nearly six minutes in length. It begins with some neat drumming, before launching into a dirty bluesy styled tune that sounds really cool. This is followed by some heavy riffing that is really cool and amazing sounding. An extremely powerful and lively listen, this is something amazing that fans of Rock, Pop and Metal will no doubt enjoy to the full. It asks the quintessential question: “Who’s gonna be my wife?” Of course, this is very much a male dominated sort of feel to this music, but still, it sounds clever, cool and amazing. There are some quirky and cool vocal lines about not giving a damn about what a prospective lover’s father says, followed by an extraordinary and manic guitar solo. This is nothing short of amazing, and it shows the world that the likes of Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen had some serious competition here. There is a breakdown with some finger-tapping guitar parts going on, and the rest of the band plays well around it. Soon enough, the song resumes and this underrated music comes alive. A great listen, this is exactly what newlyweds need to hear in their lives. Nonetheless, this is definitely impressive sounding and Paul Gilbert and company do their best to show the world that indeed, they knew their craft. A faded outro is here with many blistering and multitracked guitars. An excellent effort, no doubt about it.
Mr. Skin begins with a traditional Rock groove, harmonies and dashes of guitar and bass guitar grooving away nicely. This launches into a great sounding tune that is, quite frankly, humorously funny and interesting to hear. Cool and clever, Paul Gilbert sounds like he is trying to attract every single woman on the planet. A great listening experience, this is very quirky and clever music with another sweet shred guitar solo to fit the bill. Weird, cool and wonderful, Paul Gilbert knows how to make groovy and wonderful songs to impress the listener. A great listen, and something that older Rock fans will love, this is a great listen. The wah-wah shred guitar solo at the end is awesome.
Beautiful Girls Are Insane makes some sense if you have been chasing someone out of your league. Paul Gilbert sings in a dramatic fashion about such a situation where beautiful girls are just after money and destroying one’s head. This is quite humourous, once again but is perfectly matched musically and just sounds insanely cool. A wonderful listen, this is the sort of stuff that the people in California or Florida would play on long drives. There is a good slide guitar solo in the middle here as well, just to add some raunchy flavour to the track. A really tremendous effort, this sounds electrifying and awesome to hear. A humourous listening experience, and something worth valuing. Another killer tune, and something very underrated here.
Midnight Maryanne begins with a quirky retro organ, quickly launching into a glorious Rock tune with some fluid and melodic playing. This is very Disco influenced and sounds a lot like Eric Clapton in the process. A brilliant listening experience, Paul Gilbert sings and plays wonderfully here. This is a lot like the Bee Gees or someone similar musically. The lyrics are excellent, and the playing matches this song perfectly. With a song devoted to said Maryanne, this is matched nicely with multitracked shred guitar solos that work a treat. A forward thinking and awesome tune to listen to, this sounds really great and extraordinary. Obviously, Paul Gilbert was obsessed with getting it on at this point, and this song is another underrated and excellent listening experience. Awesome stuff, the licks at the end in the outro are just amazing.
Heavy Disco Trip begins with some loose static, and some descending UFO styled sounds and launches quickly into a wah-wah guitar groove that sounds really top. It has some awesome guitar work here and has Paul Gilbert singing about a drug influenced nightlife romp. Still, this music is really cool and listenable. A thoroughly cool and interesting listen, even for a lesser track. It changes at the drop of a hat into a furious drum roll, launching into a super fast and energetic piece of guitar soloing that is very impressive. These are nicely multitracked and recorded very well. An amazing listen here, this deserves your time and ears. A thoroughly cool and fantastic listen, this concludes with these insane solos stopping at the drop of a hat. Outstanding.
Kate Is A Star begins with beautiful fingerpicked acoustic guitars and has some really fantastic singing to accompany it. This is instantly loveable music, and this sounds really pretty and extraordinarily good. This sounds majestic and simply beautiful. Soon enough, this piece has some drums enter and this song progresses along nicely. A great melodic ballad that works incredibly well upon the listener, this is inspired by the most beautiful Pop/Rock of the past, but made it into a great piece of 1998 music. A really gorgeous tune, electric guitars enter and are nicely mixed here with some great shred playing present. If this is a love ballad, this is exactly how it should be done: simply, beautifully and melodically. A lovely listen, Rock music shows some of its best playing and melodicism in this song. Just absolutely wonderful. Worth your time and ears for sure. Really great to hear, and an upbeat joy of musicianship. Extraordinary song.
Down To Mexico begins with some awesome lead guitars that are multitracked and excellently played. Soon enough, the group launches straight into it. An awesome listen, this is the sort of thing that one needs to hear if they live in the USA and they need a break of some sort. This, again, is a really brilliant and energetic listening experience. Fine and fantastic listening, the music and lyricism are spot on for this song. Some unusual guitar leads quickly enter, and this music gets into a frenzy in the solo section. A great and quirky number, it should come as no surprise that this is the most popular song from this album. A brilliant and powerful listening experience that is really unforgettable. Grab your friends, put some beers in the car and speed up all the way down to the beach with this tune full blast and some lit Marlboro cigarettes. A really cool tune to hear, it ends with some insane guitar leads. Excellent.
Tell The Truth begins with some unusual guitar leads and a quirky shuffle drum beat structure. This quickly launches into a really top tune about getting someone to be honest about things, with a dirty and sexual tone about it all. Soon enough, an excellent guitar solo section emerges that is fast, frenetic and excellently played, before quickly launching back into the song at hand. A good and quirky number to listen to, there is a second guitar solo section with screaming guitar leads galore and a sense of real excitement here. A great listen, this sounds really fantastic musically. A lively and intricately played listen, all the way through to the lengthy fade out. Brilliant.
Wrong Man begins with some hi-hats and unusual guitar figures, before launching into a song about a lover who picked the wrong man. This isn’t the greatest song from the album here, but it has a great musical accomplishment and a set of lyrics about having hope that lovers will reunite one day. A piece of music about brokenheartedness, this makes perfect sense if you have been rejected by a love who you never can get over and if there is still a chance out there for you. A sad tune, but this is good listening all the same. More of a song than something that is shred like with its playing. A very sad lament, but good for what it is. All in all, a decent listening experience throughout. Towards the end is a slow and melodic guitar solo, just before this concludes. Excellent.
Gilberto Concerto is the last tune here and goes for nearly eight minutes in length. It begins with some classical leads being played on electric guitar. This is the 20th century equivalent of Classical Music. It sounds really fantastic, excellent and somewhat humourous as a result. Really quirky and cool, if you like Bach, Beethoven or Mozart, especially Bach as this is a piece of his (Harpsichord Concerto in A) re-interpreted with electric guitars, then you will appreciate what is on offer here. A great reminder of the power of music, influences and crossover musicianship, this is an outstanding listening experience. Lovely, awesome and lively, this is a nice quirky addition to this album as it concludes. Excellent and brilliant listening, this is guitar majesty to close one’s eyes to and enjoy. Thoroughly cool, this is a great interpretation of the classics, albeit done with shred guitars. This sounds like something shred guitar fans and musical purists can appreciate. All in all, a really awesome and interesting musical experience that sounds fluid and detailed. Wonderful and enjoyable, this music is a tremendously exciting listen for its own interpretation musically. A great listen from start to finish, and it has many multitracked guitars to keep your attention going. Awesome, and undeniably so. It sounds like the sort of music that those who reach heaven who love shred should hear upon arrival. Something different to conclude this album with. Wonderful.
This is hugely underrated and underappreciated as an album. It shows a diverse array of playing, musicianship and expertise. If there is a slight flaw here, some of the macho male chasing girls’ set of lyricism is fairly dated today, and may not be to everyone’s tastes. Despite that, Paul Gilbert proved himself to be a masterful musician on this album and never looked back. Should you listen to this album? Definitely give it a spin if you are a Classic Rock fan, you will undoubtedly love this classic album.
Truly mega awesome.
