Legends that are in the music scene today that still have some of their songs today played in nightclubs from decades ago are diamonds indeed, in their own way. Robin S, a female singer with a great voice, teamed up with an Electronic all star cast to deliver this, her debut album way back in 1993. This album, although having mixed reviews, was nonetheless a very important release in the EDM and RnB scene of the day, and is very much a necessary and good listen for many fans out there. Let’s hear it here, and hope that indeed, it has some great historical value about it.
Show Me Love is a legendary song, in fact, so legendary that both Jason Derulo and Kid Ink sampled it on future hits of their own. This track is an essential DJ nightclub staple to this very day as well. It begins with hi-hats and gritty textures, before 4/4 beats enter and a digital patch enters, which is great. Robin S gets singing, and goodness, she has a great voice on this record. This is tremendously awesome, euphoric and one of the best EDM hits in the history of the genre. A wonderful listen, this is definitely enjoyable and danceable throughout. The lyrics are also very intelligently written, and this tune is not about one night stands, but the desire for real and deep love in life. Nonetheless, this is amazing and has a great array of sounds and samples throughout. A very excellent piece of music and singing, if you love a great mix of EDM and soulful RnB, this is a definite must to hear. Fantastic, and sets the scene for both the EDM based nightclub scene and the future of music in general. It fades out quickly after four minutes in length. Fantastic.
Love For Love begins with some gritty keyboard patches, and quickly launches into another decent tune that is more or less a continuation of the previous track. Robin S sings very well here again, and this tune is really thorough and excellent. “Some people all they want is fortune, some people all they want is fame, some people all they’ll do is break your heart” is a great example of excellent lyrics for this tune, and it still sounds consistent and tremendous today. Robin S’s voice is gorgeous, exhibiting strength and melody throughout, which matches this music perfectly. A pretty, beautiful and gorgeous listen for a RnB based House music tune, the gritty textures and EDM sounds throughout are excellent. There is a gorgeous synth string section in the second half, followed by some absolutely gorgeous vocals from Robin S. A great and underrated female Soul styled singer, to be frank. Fantastic music from start to finish, once again.
I’m Gonna Love You Right (Tonight) is a soulful and smooth tune that is completely different from the first two tracks. It doesn’t sound particularly original musically, but it does work on a listening basis. Looking back to acts such as Sade and many other great female singers of the past, this is sensual, romantic and subtle. A really great piece of music to close one’s eyes to or make love to one’s significant other with, this is a really intensely emotional listen. Sure, it’s completely different to the EDM of the earlier tracks, but it does work well. A real joy and smooth listening experience, the piano and saxophone present are also a nice touch. Great music to enjoy when in the mood for some loving, Robin S reveals herself to be an accomplished singer and a good chooser of music to sing along to. Great song, even if this is not seen in the same light as Show Me Love. Excellent.
If We Could Just Be Friends begins with some drum beats, and some background talk, launching quickly into a smooth RnB tune with horns, guitar and other neat musical touches. This quickly transforms into an excellent piece of music which sounds a little 1980s for its own good. Despite that, this is a good listening experience and is about being with a man who a lady does not wish to be a gold digger with. Although this song is fairly dated by today’s standards, it still does work very nicely. An excellent piece of songcraft, this does work very well and the singing and lyricism is divine. There is a good lyrical part in the second half of the song which has some vocal treatment on it, and this does sound awesome and tremendous for what it is. A good and variable album so far, and this RnB flavoured cut points ahead to the future of the success of the genre in the 21st century. Very singalong as well. Worth hearing, and this fades out towards the end. Neat.
What I Do Best begins with some retro 1980s keyboards and production, which is a little too dated for this sort of music. Still, Robin S sings wonderfully and with a load of romantic intimacy here. This tune is good nonetheless, and it is deeply romantic and lovely music to listen to. Robin S’s voice is amazingly beautiful and gorgeous here, and she showcases her own unique talent in this respect. A really refreshing and relaxing tune to hear, this is amazingly pretty and wonderful to enjoy. Some of the lyrics present are really brilliant: “Time, enough, there’s more than enough to share, we can climb the highest mountain, forever can begin, yeah” is just an example of the lovely romantic nature of this music. Nonetheless, a really great listening experience is present here, and this music will make you fall in love (hopefully, not literally) with this sort of music and Robin S as well. A really fine and awesome tune, it does have a key change in the second half, which is a little unnecessary, but still, this does make the song more interesting than what would be otherwise. A good song, for all its flaws, it works tremendously well. Excellent music.
My Kind Of Man begins with some swirling electronic sounds, some soothing vocals and more groove based music at hand. Robin S whispers gently on this song intro, as the track builds up very nicely. Singing about more relationship styled romance events, Robin S’s voice is really excellent on this song, and the tune is a real winner. This is RnB with Pop influences and a touch of post-Disco with some 1980s musical influences as well. This does sound very good, although it is a little odd that this album has two EDM styled tracks to begin with, followed by a ton of retro ballads. Still, this is magical and passionate listening present. A pretty, dynamic and gorgeous piece of music, Robin S surely is an underrated vocalist on this style of music. The fluttering vocal melodies sound awesome and tremendously powerful. If anything, this is perfect music to make love and/or babies to, it is super pretty and sweet. Nonetheless, this does work quite nicely and it sounds like a beautiful and sweet ballad. This is surely underrated music, although it is very much digitally constructed music with a pseudo-Michael Jackson flavour to it. Nice song though.
I Want To Thank You is more of the same sounds as before and has singing devoted to God here, which Robin S acknowledges God’s presence in her life, steering her through the best and worst of life. It quickly launches into a slightly more EDM flavoured tune present, which is unusual for this kind of song. In any case, those who aren’t religious or Christian in any way may find this song a little offputting, but others may enjoy it regardless. A powerful, melodic and wonderful piece of music that works, despite its religious overtones, this is very impressive regardless. An uplifting and musically magical tune present, this will make sense to those who are Christian and who love EDM as well. More minimal than previous tracks on this album, this is RnB post-Disco Pop music that works nicely. A great piece of music to hear, and it wraps up nicely. Very sweet, despite its religious overtones.
Once In A Lifetime Love begins with clanging piano, 4/4 beats and string melodies, entering into another House flavoured tune that sounds like the mixing isn’t as good as it could be on this particular song. Still, this is a good and quality listen about love itself. A really great listening experience, Robin S’s voice is still very lovely and consistent on this album. Despite the fact some may dismiss her as a one hit wonder, this album is quality for what it is. The chorus is a little repetitive as well, but that’s okay for this kind of music. The music itself is pretty, interesting and irresistable to listen to. A true joy of music and musicality to listen to, this is a 1990s take on Disco, quite clearly. Still, that is not a bad thing here. A very good piece of music, towards the end are some strange vocal parts that are catchy, and this ends with a bit of studio trickery.
Back It Up launches into a somewhat Acid House based piece of music, with gigantic beats, the reoccurring sonic patch throughout this album and some TB-303 styled sounds. Robin S sings in a beautiful and very pretty way, and she sounds like a masterful vocalist on this song, and the album overall. The lyrics are about heartbreak and relationship issues, and Robin S sings in a very open and honest way. Nonetheless, a great and enjoyable piece of music and musicianship, along with the rest of this album, this does work incredibly well for what it is. This music will take you places you have not explored typically in a Pop music sense. Although this songs comes across as a warning to a lover, it still sounds great, even today. A soothing listen, although the lyrics are quite bitter here. Good to hear, even for loose fans of EDM, this album is quite consistent, as is this song. A good listening experience.
Back and Forth sounds a bit like a stoner sort of groovy tune, except it is unlikely so in its intention. Some cut up beats, samples and sounds on this album are very pretty, lovely and interesting, with Robin S singing about a two timer lover. Nonetheless, despite the vicious lyricism, this does sound interesting and quite catchy for what it is. An uplifting yet bitter piece of musicality, Robin S repeatedly sings, “You always think of yourself…” and it wouldn’t be unusurprising if this song is aimed at a real life ex-boyfriend of hers. There are some good male backing vocals on this song as well, along with piano parts, electronic beats and some minimal Electronic sounds. A really cool tune for what it is, Robin S hits the high notes very well in the second half of the song and nails that musically. A very good song, even today.
Brighter Day begins with some weird vocal parts, before launching into another post-Disco House music groove that is quite good, with the reoccuring electronic patch of this album. Again, Robin S sings very well, and she delivers another very Christian sort of tune in its lyrical overtones. This music is an ecletic mixture of House, Disco, EDM and RnB that, although is a bit of an acquired taste, is excellent and musically decent for what it is. A very upbeat and tuneful piece of music, this is an danceable tune that still sounds a lot better than much of the EDM of today. Robin S articulates musicality, singing and lyricism very well, and she delivers another upbeat and joyous listen on this tune. It ends with repeated lyrics and a reprise of the weird vocal parts. Excellent music for what this is, all the way through to the fade out.
Who’s Gonna Raise The Child begins with some bass guitar, some more 1980s retro sounds and enters into a song about heartbreak and relationship regrets. This is a song about being a single parent, and it is fairly close to the bone. This song is not the best at all, and is a real stinker on this album, to be fair. It easily could have been removed here, this is not a good musical nor selling point of this album. Some male vocals switch parts with Robin S and this just seems like a ridiculous topic to sing about, for the most part. A bitter, depressing and rather needless listen here, this is not a good song overall. Although divorce is extremely common nowadays, this is not a good point of view to sing about something. The key change on this song is also, awful. This album hits rock bottom on this song, and this particular piece must be avoided. Also, the length of this tune is rather long for such a simple piece of music, at over five minutes long. A good example of a song not to write, this does not sound like something one can enjoy listen to. A depressing listen, and do not hear this tune, if you can help it.
When You Find Love is another rather disappointing listen which uses similar sounds from the previous track. It has keyboards, saxophone, and some soft and sensual vocals. This is a sort of of song about finding love and fixing one’s heart up in a long term sense in relationships. Although it is not as bad as the song before it, it is a bit of a drag at this point, and disappointing as a song. Still, this RnB is miles better than a contemporary artist (e.g. Rihanna) and what they have to offer. This song is okay, although the melodramaticism of this tune is somewhat off-putting. The saxophone solo is quite sweet, however yet the key change is not. A bit cringe worthy, but some will like this more than others. An okay song, but not the best on this album by far. It ends after four minutes in length.
Show Me Love – Extended Mix is the final track on this album, and likely the most important track as well on this album. It begins with the gritty textures and 4/4 beats, with a load of cool hi-hats. Soon enough, this builds up very well into the main section of the song. It repeats the main melody a little more than the original does, and it sounds brilliant. This is one of the greatest songs created and remixed, not just in 1993, but in the history of EDM music as well. A very awesome remix to listen to, DJs no doubt paid attention and have used this particular track as a staple of many wild, crazy nights in their careers. This remix does remove some of the portion of the original mix in a breakdown and sounds really minimal, catchy and groove based. If you cannot dance to this particular track, then you are obviously not a fan of how great that EDM can be. There is a keyboard in the middle of this track, before this more or less returns to the beginning of the track in its logical progression. Both this remix and original song are great to hear, and both are equals in the music history books. Robin S’s voice is gorgeous and magical, and suits this song perfectly. You definitely could dance all night long to this song (and other EDM classics) if you wanted to, this is a thoroughly amazing and cool tune. The fact that your local nightclubbing district still pumps this tune regularly is proof of its greatness. The remix here is very amazing, and Robin S’s voice is amazing here, too. A great seven minute remix, this works incredibly well. Great to hear. It ends with beats and a fade out.
Robin S’s music here, for very much the most part on this album is very, very good. It does sound really good, even to this day. However, having said that, this album is not perfect and it does have a couple of very poor tracks towards the end. Still, this is emotional, uplifting and romance based music and should be noted here for the titled track alone, which is absolutely brilliant. Should you listen to this album? Give it a whirl, but be prepared to skip a few tracks here when necessary.
A very good and eclectic mixture of sound.
8/10
